About the artist and the Nine Tall Trees collection:
Dennis Chippindale is an accomplished architect based in Ōtautahi, and also a prolific amateur artist. He is passionate about being a life-long learner and, whilst investigating the region's history, he discovered documents detailing land sales of the mid 1800's that resulted in Ngāi Tahu being disposessed of the majority of their land and associated mahinga kai. As well as being confronted by the injustices that occurred, he was also struck by the peaceful acceptance shown by Ngāi Tahu in reaching an agreement with the Crown and moving forward since then. Dennis produced nine artworks, each one featuring a tree endemic to te Waipounamu and a map with a land deed. Gradually, we see the land being reduced until there is no land left under the kaitiaki of Ngāi Tahu.

Original artworks were sold via auction with a total of $2964 being donated to Ngāi Tahu's school starter packs venture. $10 from the sale of each print will be donated to the same charity.
